1 IDENTITY / 6 GAMES / 12 YEARS / 35M+ PLAYERS / 9 MAJOR MUSIC AWARDS / 500M+ STREAMS/VIEWS / ROLLING STONE #3
Feel For Music has led music supervision and licensing across the entire six-game Life is Strange franchise, overseeing in-game music, score, marketing assets and physical soundtracks since 2015. Working closely with Square Enix, Don’t Nod and subsequently Deck Nine, we helped develop an award-winning musical identity that has become a core part of the franchise. The challenge has always been bigger than simply finding great music. It is about creating a musical world that feels authentic to the characters, supports the emotional storytelling and remains recognisably Life is Strange, while evolving with every new chapter of the universe. The franchise has won more than 100 awards, while the original game alone has reached more than 20 million players. Rolling Stone ranked its soundtrack No.3 in its Best Video Game Soundtracks of All Time, behind only Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and GTA: Vice City. The extremely limited original vinyl soundtrack we put together has also become a serious collector’s item, with copies selling for more than £1,000 on the secondary market.
MUSIC SUPERVISION
Working in conjunction with the developers and publisher, we developed the music strategy for each game, covering original score, commercial licensing, bespoke songwriting, marketing and soundtrack releases. Across the series we have licensed artists including Radiohead, girl in red, Justice, Phoebe Bridgers, Michael Kiwanuka, Foals, José González and many more. Along the way we have taken a pioneering approach to streamer-safe music and increasingly blurred the lines between commercial songwriting, artist collaboration and traditional game score.
ARTIST PARTNERSHIPS
Some of the most distinctive music in the franchise has come through deeper creative partnerships with artists including Daughter, Angus & Julia Stone and mxmtoon. It was a real pleasure to bring Daughter on board to score Life is Strange: Before the Storm. Rather than approaching the project as a conventional game score, they created an entire album around the world and characters of the game. Music From Before the Storm has now generated more than 135 million Spotify streams and remains one of the defining musical statements of the franchise. For True Colors, Angus & Julia Stone created an original album for the game, while mxmtoon became both a musical contributor and part of the wider launch campaign.
ORIGINAL COMPOSITION
Original songwriting has been a major part of the musical identity of Life is Strange. Artists including Novo Amor, Holly Humberstone, chloe moriondo and dodie have created original music for the franchise alongside our own composers and collaborators. Novo Amor’s “Haven”, written specifically for Life is Strange: True Colors, has now passed 100 million Spotify streams. For Life is Strange: Double Exposure and Life is Strange: Reunion, the original scores were created by our in-house composition team, allowing us to bring supervision, songwriting, licensed music and score together as part of one overall creative approach.
MARKETING
Music has also played a central role in how Life is Strange has been marketed. Across the franchise we have supervised music for numerous trailers and campaigns, with our in-house team also composing, remixing and adapting music specifically for marketing use. We pioneered streamer-safe licensing approaches across many of these assets, helping campaigns travel more effectively across creator platforms and social media. We have also looked for ways to take the music beyond conventional trailers. Angus & Julia Stone created beautiful music videos around their True Colors soundtrack, we went behind the scenes with Daughter to document the creation of Before the Storm, mxmtoon hosted the True Colors announcement event, and for Double Exposure we created a series of live performance films from our base at Metropolis Studios featuring NewDad, Chloe Moriondo, Tessa Rose Jackson and others. Across six games and more than a decade, the aim has remained the same: to make music feel fundamental to the world of Life is Strange, rather than something simply placed on top of it.
